The Peacock and Juno
In a magnificent garden filled with blooming flowers and perfectly trimmed hedges lived a very elegant Peacock. The Peacock had the most beautiful tail feathers in the entire world. When he fanned them open, they shimmered with brilliant greens, deep blues, and bright gold spots that looked like magical eyes.
Every time he walked past, all the other animals would stop and stare at his glorious feathers.
But despite his beauty, the Peacock was not happy. One afternoon, he sat near a marble fountain, listening to a tiny Nightingale singing a sweet, beautiful song in a nearby branch. The song was so lovely that even the wind stopped to listen.
The Peacock puffed his chest and tried to sing a beautiful song, too. But when he opened his beak, all that came out was a harsh, loud SQUAWK! Several frogs jumped into the water in fright, and the other birds covered their ears.
Ashamed and angry, the Peacock flew up to Mount Olympus to complain to the Goddess Juno, who was the protector of all animals.
“Oh, great Juno!” the Peacock cried. “It is entirely unfair! You gave the tiny, plain brown Nightingale a voice that sounds like sweet music. Everyone stops to listen to him. But when I try to sing, everyone runs away laughing! You must give me a beautiful singing voice too!”
Juno looked down from her throne at the shimmering green and blue Peacock. She sighed and shook her head gently. “You are complaining about nothing, my beautiful bird,” she replied. “I gave every animal a unique and special gift so they could all be different.”
“To the eagle, I gave incredible strength,” Juno explained. “To the cheetah, I gave blazing speed. To the nightingale, I gave a beautiful voice. And to you, I gave the most magnificent, breathtaking feathers in the whole world.”
The Peacock looked back at his shimmering tail feathers, watching them sparkle in the sunlight.
“Do not be jealous of the gifts others have, and do not be upset by what you lack,” Juno told him wisely. “Instead, learn to love the unique gifts you were given. You may not sing like a nightingale, but the nightingale will never shine like you.”
The Peacock finally understood. He fanned out his gorgeous tail feathers with immense pride and never complained about his voice again!
Moral of the Story: Be content with your own gifts. You cannot have everything, and what you have is already special.
