The Emperor's Nightingale
Long ago, in a magnificent palace built entirely of fine porcelain, lived a mighty Emperor. His gardens were the most beautiful in the world, stretching so far that even the head gardener didn’t know where they ended.
In the deepest, most quiet part of the woods past the garden lived a small, plain brown bird called a Nightingale. Though he did not look like much, his singing was so beautiful that poor fishermen would stop all their work just to listen to him.
One day, the Emperor heard about the Nightingale and ordered his guards to find the bird and bring it to the palace to sing. The guards searched the woods and found the little brown bird. The Nightingale agreed to sing for the Emperor.
When the Nightingale sang in the grand porcelain palace, the music was so sweet and piercingly beautiful that tears came to the Emperor’s eyes. “You shall never leave my palace,” the Emperor decided, giving the bird a golden cage.
The Emperor was very happy, until one afternoon, a package arrived. It was a gift from another king—a mechanical toy nightingale covered in diamonds, rubies, and sapphires! When you wound it up with a golden key, it would sing a pretty waltz and nod its glittering head.
“This is incredible!” the Emperor cheered. “It is so colorful, and it sings the same song perfectly every single time!”
The Emperor was so fascinated by the shiny jewels and the endless mechanical song that he completely forgot about the real Nightingale. The real bird, seeing he was no longer needed, quietly flew out the window back to his peaceful forest.
The Emperor listened to the mechanical bird thirty-three times a day for years, until one evening, there was a loud POP! inside the toy. The gears had worn out, and the toy broke completely. The music stopped forever.
The Emperor became very ill with sadness. He lay in his huge bed, missing the beautiful music. Suddenly, the most beautiful song drifted through his open window. It was the real Nightingale!
The real bird had heard the Emperor was sick and came back to sing for him. His natural song was sweeter and more healing than a toy’s song could ever be.
“Thank you, little bird,” the Emperor smiled, feeling much better. “A machine may be pretty on the outside, but it can never replace the true beauty of nature.”
Moral of the Story: Artificial things can never replace the beauty of the natural world.
